Repair or replace?

For an older system, a big repair may or may not be worth it. The decision depends on your system's age, condition and the price of each option.

Know your system's age

The model and serial number label on your equipment can often tell you its age; the manufacturer or a technician can decode it.

Get both prices in writing

Ask for the repair price and a replacement price, with the equipment model, size and efficiency rating for the replacement.

Ask about warranties

Many parts have a manufacturer warranty that may still apply, even if the labor is not covered. Registration may have been required when the unit was installed.

Do not decide in a panic

If you have a safe way to stay warm or cool for a day or two, use that time to compare replacement quotes, which are large purchases.
