HVAC repair costs: labor, parts and diagnostic fees
HVAC repair costs combine separate charges. Understanding service calls, diagnostics, labor and parts makes estimates easier to compare.
Service call or trip fee
Many companies charge just to come to your home. Ask the amount on the phone, and whether it is higher on nights, weekends or holidays.
Diagnostic fee
This pays for finding the problem. Ask whether it is credited toward the repair if you hire the same company.
Flat-rate vs. hourly pricing
Some companies use a flat-rate price book with a set price per repair, no matter how long it takes. Others charge an hourly rate plus parts. Ask which method they use.
Parts and refrigerant
Parts like capacitors, motors and control boards are priced separately. Refrigerant is usually charged by the pound, and older refrigerants can be expensive because they are being phased out.
Permits
Some work, especially equipment replacement, may need a local permit and inspection. Ask whether the price includes the permit.
